During the Maintenance Audit of R & D Carbon Equipment, Mr Cobus Smit, Service Technician of R & D Carbon Support with the assistance of the lab staff, conducted a very successful audit on the R & D Carbon equipment.
The spacious and well lay out lab and enthuastic lab staff, contribute to a successful visit at QATALUM. The laboratory is highly successful in their analysis under the leadership of Mr Santosh Kumar (Superintendent Laboratory) and Mr Kamta Sharma (Co-ordinator Carbon Analysis).
R & D Carbon Support ensures their business relations with QATAR Aluminium by offering their on-going support and assistance as a valuable client.
During R & D Carbon Support commissioning, excellent support from the laboratory and maintenance staff was experienced. The installation of the equipment was simplified due to a well prepared location in this well established laboratory.
DUBAL Laboratory Management, Sara Huwairib (Head of Laboratory), as well as Mr K.C. Pandey (Chemist) and all the lab staff made this commissioning a memorable experience.

Just at the beginning of the new year the start-up of the newly refurbished anode bake furnace of TRIMET Aluminium Hamburg was initiated successfully. At the end of the start-up the 3 fires of the anode bake furnace will reach their nominal yearly capacity of 121'000 tons of anodes.
The new furnace of Kazakhstan Aluminium was started last December in cooperation with Riedhammer. Due to the very low ambient temperature in Kazakhstan a furnace dry-out takes place prior to the anode production. The total output of the furnace will be 144'000 tons per year.
R&D Carbon recently acquired a new Panalytical XRF Elemental analysis equipment. After 2 months of parallel analysis on the new and old apparatus, the calibration and verification of this top level unit has now been finalised.
We are pleased to advise that our engineers are available upon request to help support clients to set up their Panalytical equipment.
R&D Carbon has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of the anode bake furnace firing system at the Taweelah site of EMAL in Abu Dhabi. With the Phase I of the green field smelter being completed, EMAL will produce 750'000 tpa of aluminium, requiring 450'000 tpa of baked anodes. These anodes are baked in two open top furnaces.
With the installation of the latest BPS generation of R&D Carbon, outstanding performance figures could be achieved that set new standards for furnace productivity, anode quality and specific energy consumption.
A paper jointly prepared by EMAL and R&D Carbon is planned to be published at the TMS 2012 conference in Orlando.

Shandong Nanshan Aluminium Co., Ltd., China
Jinan Wanfang Carbon Co., Ltd.
Shandong Jining Carbon Group Co., Ltd., a short history on the company submitted by Ms. Shirley Liu follows:
Jining Carbon was established in 1987for the production of anode paste. In 2000, the company started producing pre-baked carbon anodes and has since increased production from 60,000mt to 300,000 mt. Half of the anode production is exported, and half is sold to the domestic market.
The company also has a very large coal tar processing plant with an annual capacity of 300,000 mt per year. It also produces refined naphthalene and carbon black and other related chemical products.
Maintenance Support
The Support Division has been actively involved in performing on-site maintenance and audits for various clients over the past few months. With the restricted budgets presently available for the acquisition of new instruments and the increased demand for the production of quality anodes, clients have become more tentative to the importance of preventative maintenance.
A new presentation is available for free download regarding the anode demand and supply issue for the decade to come.

R&D Carbon is currently investing in the development of graphitized carbon products and applications.
Industry is in urgent need of new carbon products including quality raw materials for the manufacturing of graphite electrodes for steel production as well as graphitized cathodes for aluminum production.
Coal tar based cokes are able to fulfill the stringent quality requirements for these applications.
R&D Carbon provides the interface technology from feedstock selection to the end-products between suppliers, coke producers and coke users.
From Octoeber 12 - 15 2010, R&D Carbon has held the 4th edition of the International Training Course "Anodes - From the Raw Materials to the Pot Performance" with 65 participants from 19 different nations.
The content of the coures covered all relevant topics of the carbon anodes used for the aluminium production: anode raw materials, green anode production, baking, rodding, thermal shock resistance, slotted anodes, burning behaviour, quality improvment, specifications, process optimization, cost evaluations and new technologies. If you could not participate, the coures proceedings are available for Euro 500.-
The participants rated the coures as highly recommendable with an average score of 8.7 in a scale from 1 to 10. the next coures in Switzerland is scheduled for October 9 to 12, 2012. If you are interested in on-site training and/or 2010 course proceedings, please contact Dr. Markus W. Meier (meier@rd-carbon.com).

Our engineer, Mr. Cobus Smit offered operational and technical training to the carbon lab staff. We also made use of this opportunity to conduct Maintenance and Audit on all other R&D Carbon Laboratory testing equipment and we are pleased to advise that they will soon be receiving their conformity certificate.
Congratulations to Francelina and her team at MOZAL.
To meet the requirments of the industry for steel electrodes and for cathodes for the aluminium industry. R&D Carbon invested heavily in the pilot plant for graphitized carbon products.
Our engineers, David Trump and Cobus Smit from R&D Carbon Support offered EMAL assistance with the start-up and commissioning. Operators and technical staff were given training on the operation and maintenance of the laboratory equipment and will be receiving their competency certificates soon.
We wish EMAL carbon laboratory management and staff our best wishes and wish to remind them that we will be there for back-up and support.
